Before we get to our tip of the week, here's the latest question submitted to the Pros That Know at Field of RV Dreams.

Question: When I plugged in my trailer to a campsite outlet I got a shock, is this normal?

Answer: Absolutely not.First is SHUT OFF THE POWER IMMEDIATELY.In almost all cases the problem is not the trailer. Ask the campground owner to check the outlet for correct polarity and proper ground. It is a good idea to always have a plug in outlet tester in the unit this can save time and money.

If the outlet is ok then check for a defective outlet adaptor or extension cord. The same tester can check these items as well. If these are the problem repair and then re-connect the unit. If this does not work leave the unit unplugged and call your dealer for help. We normally receive a number of electrical questions, so I will cover some of these in our next tip of the week.

Tip of the Week:

Leaks that appear to be coming from a window usually are. Most R.V’s have drain slots at the bottom of the window, which are designed to make sure that the water can escape.

However If these get plugged with dirt, bugs or any other types of matter, the water will back up and find a way into the unit. Just take a screw driver or even a sharp stick if that’s all you have and clean them out. An air hose if available works really well also.

The other common area for leaks is the TV antenna, the reason being the wire can easily get caught on a branch and also wind damage can break the seal. When you do your annual checks of your roof this is one area to definitely check. If it is a more persistant leak see your dealer immediately.

Happy Camping

Previous questions to Field of Dreams

Question: I've seen the letters GVWR in relation to tow rates on RVs, but really don't know what this refers to.  Can you help?

Answer: An important question, GVWR means gross vehicle weight rating. This is your trailer and all contents. If your trailer dry weight is 8000 lbs and your GVWR is 12000 lbs this denotes to 4000 lbs of carrying capacity. Also interestingly, most families of four carry from 800 to 1200 lbs of cargo. You need to consider this when purchasing your trailer to be sure you have the right vehicle to tow it safely.

Question: When I'm taking my RV out of storage in the spring, what's the most important thing I need to remember to do to get it ready for another camping season?

Answer: There are a few things to do for sure. First is to charge the batteries and fill with propane. Then dewinterize the unit, to do this put your hot water tank plug back in, hook up to city water and flush all the lines really well. Then make sure your hot water tank is full and you are ready to start lighting appliances.

While your filling with water do a quick check around the unit inside and out to make sure there are no visible leaks. It is always a good idea to get on the roof check seals around all openings if they look cracked get some certified R.V. sealant, clean and reseal. Also check tire pressure and a quick walkaround to tighten loose screws, nuts and bolts that do get loose with use.

Question: I had a hitch put on my pickup after I bought it, when I purchased the hitch I was told it was good for 10000 lbs. My truck says I have a GVW of 7600 lbs on the door plate, is that trailer towing weight?

Answer: No that would be the maximum weight of your truck and all cargo. An example would be a slide in camper, trailer towing weight is much different and can be found in most owner manuals. If you do not have a manual you can find that information on-line at trailer life’s towing guide or www.trailerlifedirectory.com. The staff at Field of RV Dreams would also be pleased to give you that information as well.
