Lethbridge Walk for ALS
Date: Saturday, September 18, 2010

People from all over central Alberta will be gearing up to walk in the Lethbridge Walk for ALS on Saturday, September 18, 2010. In the past, the event has been a huge success and raised over $60,000 for ALS support and research. We are hoping this year will also be a great success!

ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrigs disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disorder that causes the degeneration of a select group of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and even smiling almost impossible.

The Lethbridge Walk is one of over 70 Walks for ALS that take place across Canada. This year, over 100,000 people will participate in the Walks across Canada.

Special Labour Day Program at The Galt
Date: Monday, September 06, 2010

GWG - Piece by Piece - Monday, Spetember 6, 2010 at 7:00 pm - Doors open at 6:00 pm

A Juno-nominated folk singer, an Alberta historian, and the story of a garment factory which supplied thousands of workers in Alberta and beyond combine into a multi-media Labour Day event at the Galt Museum & Archives on Monday, September 6 beginning at 7:00 pm. Free tickets to GWG: Piece by Piece are available from each of the ten sponsoring unions or at the door.

Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award-nominated folk singer Maria Dunn and historian Catherine C. Cole have joined forces for GWG: Piece by Piece, a musical, historical, multi-media labour history presentation which tells the stories of immigrant women who worked in Edmonton's Great Western Garment Company factory during its 93-year history.

Historian Catherine C. Cole will present an introduction to the Piece by Piece video ballad, placing the stories of the immigrant women working at the plant into the broader context of the history of the company.  The GWG Company marketed its work wear to unionized workers, including miners and railwaymen in Southern Alberta, and made prisoner of war uniforms worn at the Lethbridge WWII POW camp

The video ballad features songs written and performed by Juno-nominated songwriter Maria Dunn, research interviews and archival materials provided by historian Catherine C. Cole, and audiovisual materials filmed and edited by Don Bouzek of Edmonton's Ground Zero Productions.

GWG: Piece by Piece was first presented in Edmonton in 2007 as part of the City of Edmonton Cultural Capital Community Arts Program. The Royal Alberta Museum has created a virtual exhibit of the GWG Story at The Virtual Museum of Canada: http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/virtualExhibit/GWG/index.html

Doors open at 6:30 pm, and refreshments will be available. The Labour Day presentation at the Galt Museum & Archives is supported by: Alberta Federation of Labour, Canadian Union of Postal Workers Lethbridge Local, Canadian Union of Postal Workers Prairie Region, CLC - Canadian Labour Congress, CUPE Local 290, CUPE Local 70, Health Sciences Association of Alberta, Lethbridge and District Labour Council, Public Service Alliance of Canada, and United Steel Workers.

GWG: Piece by Piece is the second of three special summer programs for adults.  The first was a specialized garden tour in July. The final program, Watercolour for Total Beginners, is scheduled for Friday, September 17 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm when artist Susann Staenz will teach basic brush strokes & watercolour techniques. All supplies are provided and absolutely no experience required! This workshop takes place during Lethbridge’s ArtWalk and Alberta Arts Days.  For more information on all events and programs at the Galt Museum & Archives visit www.galtmuseum.com.
