When I think of spiders…I think of Halloween or getting out a blow torch to protect myself but the eight-legged creatures actually play an important part in another holiday. The story behind the tradition of hanging a Christmas spider on the Christmas tree goes back to a folk tale in Europe.
The story goes that a widowed mother and her children were too poor to decorate their Christmas tree, so friendly spiders spun webs on the tree and when the family woke on Christmas morning, the spider had spun beautiful silver and gold webs (sometimes said to be the origin of tinsel). From there on, the family had lots of good fortune.
Even though I’d love to have lots of good fortune, I’m not so sure I’ll be hanging spider ornaments on my tree anytime soon.
