This concept is a bit too futuristic for my liking but the new Tesla Model 3 has a lack of a traditional key fob or keys which has been replaced by the Tesla smartphone app.
The Model 3 can sense an authorized driver’s smartphone from up to 30 feet away, turning a driver’s smartphone into a virtual key, allowing you to set the Model 3 doors to automatically unlock when approaching the car, the doors lock themselves when the driver walks away from the car.
I have sooo many questions. Like what happens when your smartphone battery dies? Can you still access your car if you lose your phone? Or what if someone else (a significant other) is driving your car and doesn’t have your phone? I’m sure they’re working out the kinks but it still seems a bit too Jetsons-esque.
