September 12, 2018. The Humboldt Broncos returned to the ice to start the 2018-2019 season in the SJHL. Things were different this year. The team took the ice as they always did, but for these boys, this season meant more. They were playing for the Broncos team of 2017/18. We will never forget the horrific accident on April 6 that claimed the lives of 16 staff and players of the team.
The stands were packed, not an empty seat in the house, but also not a tear filled eye as the roster was introduced one by one. To cap it all off, a few of the survivors from the crash were in attendance for the team that they once played for. As the puck was dropped, fans anxiously waited for that first goal from the Broncos to stand up and cheer, but it would have to wait until the second period.
As soon as that puck slid past the goaltender of the Nipawin Hawks, the fans exploded in cheers for their team as this long awaited goal finally was scored. Sadly, this would be the only one the Broncos scored in the night, as they would fall to Nipawin by a score of 2-1, but the Broncos have nothing to be ashamed of. They played their hearts out from the first puck drop to the last buzzer.
